Kathrine Brathen (she/her), MA, LP

Beginning in therapy, or therapy with a new provider, takes courage. The quality of the relationship between client and therapist is central to your experience doing this work. A good fit can make heavy work a bit lighter and the shared celebrations of making wanted change sweeter. You’re wise to be thoughtful about who might help you achieve the change you seek; it’s helpful to have a support and guide you trust and feel seen and understood by.

How I Work

I love doing therapy. Over the past fifteen years I have had the honor to witness some incredible people better understand and cope with their emotions and transform their relationships with themselves and others. It’s my passion to help people develop greater self-compassion. I bring my authentic self to the therapeutic relationship and help create a safe setting for you to do the same. I value kindness and direct communication equally, and balance striving for change with acceptance. In session you will receive validation, practical skills, challenge, lots of analogies, and even humor as we work together.

We start by first becoming more aware of your habitual behaviors and thoughts. Considering if they’re useful for you now, we identify your goals for change, explore alternatives (and increase your options by use of teaching skills and techniques.) I draw from a variety of theoretical orientations and methods to center your needs and goals. The approaches that most often inform my work include Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Feminist Therapy, and use of mindfulness, self compassion and body awareness in session.

Whether you’re seeking to shift your perspective and have a safe space for being seen and heard deeply, or are coping with a chronic mood disorder and wanting practical skills with a healthy dose of validation and respect, let’s meet and get started in figuring it out! Life can be beautiful even when there is pain. People can cope effectively with tremendous challenges and still find life worth living.
